How do I organise a music tutor?
STEP 1 – Choosing a Tutor
It is a requirement that ALL music students enrolled in the above courses MUST elect a music tutor for approval by the Course Convenor in order to teach him or her music lessons during the semester.
NB: The minimum requirement of a music tutor is that they have a tertiary degree in music, specialising in the instrument they are teaching.
This semester the practical exams will be held in the Exam Period from the 4 - 6 November 2009 (TBC). Students will need to have completed all lessons by this time.
1st year students are required to attend 10 lessons
2nd year students are required to attend 10 lessons
3rd year students are required to attend 12 lessons
The University offers music students a subsidy for music tutor payments. The subsidy is $57 per lesson.
1st & 2nd year students are subsidized $570.
3rd year students are subsidized $684.
In order for the University to subsidize music tutor payments ALL music students MUST complete a Music Tutor Form and return it to the EMPA Office by the specified deadline.
STEP 2 – Completing a Music Tutor Form
All students will receive an email containing the Music Tutor Form before the beginning of the semester. It is the student’s responsibility to fill out the form and return it to the EMPA Office.
EMPA Office location:
School of English, Media and Performing Arts
Room 311U, Level 3
Sir Robert Webster Building
Open Mon – Fri 9am - 5pm
Music Tutor Forms MUST be handed into the EMPA Office by FRIDAY 24 JULY
STEP 3 – Music Tutor Approval
When you have handed in your Music Tutor Form the Music Program Coordinator, must then approve it. You will receive notice via your student email if there is a problem. For this reason, among many others, it is important that you check your student emails regularly.
STEP 4 – Guiding your Tutor to the right Information
Once your music tutor has been approved, they will receive a Music Tutor Information Package. It contains: instructions for your tutor; forms they need to keep track of your progress; and forms for their payment. The tutor is responsible for filling out and returning the forms in their Music Tutor Information Package.
The Music Tutor Information Package will be mailed out to tutors. It is also available to download below. The package contains:
- Music tutor letter (PDF) (185 Kb)
- Progress report (PDF) (177 Kb)
- Sign On Form/Student Declaration (PDF) (157 Kb)
- Sample Tax Invoice (PDF) (46 Kb) (Do not fill in - it is just used as an example of what Invoices should look like - please create your own)
- Miscellaneous and Sundry Payments – SAL114 Form (PDF) (40 Kb)
STEP 5 – Returning Forms to EMPA
Once you have ensured that your tutor has received the Music Tutor Information Package, your tutor will need to fill out the forms and return them to the EMPA Office. All forms are due to be handed in on the 2nd October 2009. This includes:
- Sign-On Form/Student Declaration Form
- Student Progress Report
Then, depending on the tutor’s situation, they will need to fill out and return these forms, also by the 2nd October 2009:
If the music tutor does NOT have an ABN:
- Miscellaneous and Sundry Payments – SAL114 Form
- TFN Declaration Form (can be obtained from selected newsagents)
If the music tutor has an ABN:
- Tax Invoice
STEP 6 – Processing of payment
When your tutor has filled out and sent in the forms correctly, EMPA will start processing the invoices from the invoice deadline, 2nd October, and those invoices will be paid within 30 days of that date
