Fig Tree Theatre

THIS VENUE IS CLOSED FOR REFURBISHMENT AND WILL REOPEN IN 2010.

The Fig Tree Theatre is an end-stage performance space with a 166 seat capacity. This historic theatre was the first home of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and where the Old Tote Theatre Company began.

The Fig Tree Theatre has been an affordable and accessible venue used by a wide range of professional, community and student groups - including the Russian Theatre Society, UNSW student theatre societies, small dance companies and performance companies. Many practitioners have also used the theatre as a creative development space to try out new work, develop ideas and inspire new writing.

Hidden behind a construction site, there is a permanent exhibition in the foyer area that highlights the performance history of the space. Over the last few years the University campus has undergone substantial change and this area is one of the last remaining corners that captures and reflects on its history. As actor and UNSW alumni Annie Byron said recently "a city without old buildings is like a person without a soul".

This part of campus, and in particular the Old Tin Hut has a special place in UNSW history. It is an important site that saw the development of Australian theatre both in this city and nationally.

Keep an eye out for developments in this area. If you would like to be kept up to date please contact the Creative Practice & Research Unit at cpru@unsw.edu.au.
